🗣 Imposter Syndrome? You won't break my soul.

Let's sound off.

👋🏽 We are back this week to address the HATER in the room. Imposter Syndrome.

Yo. You’re on Mute. was literally created from the pits of imposter syndrome. If you have ever questioned why you have reached a level of success, felt unworthy of an accomplishment, felt you weren’t ‘smart’ enough, or just doubted yourself overall - this one is for you.

As new ways of working arise and our home + work life tend to blend together, it will be important to be consistent in knowing one objective fact. You are enough. PERIODT.

Our YYOM vision is centered around empowerment through unity. We see a future where HR/People Operations is a beacon of that foundation. Our vision is to bridge gaps, ensuring marginalized groups access resources that propel them to new heights. Done our way.

Success looks different for everyone. I want you to be the ultimate designer and own your success story.

But first, we have to unmask the barriers of imposter syndrome and how it can impact us in all areas of life.

Honesty hour: I have been told I would never amount to anything in a career because 1) I was a teenage mom and 2) I didn’t dress (read: LOOK) the part.

Imagine if I didn’t unlearn the mental programming of those two untruths. F*CK that. The biggest hurdles are not necessarily wrapped up in the learning. It’s in the unlearning that we tend to struggle.

A serious pivot doesn’t automatically need your permission, but rather your patience. Easier said than done, I know.

“My life accelerated, but had to wait my turn. But then I redecorated, that means my tables turn. ”

- J. Cole

In the quest for success and achievement, many of us encounter the ultimate sh*t starter: Imposter Syndrome. It's a phenomenon (and originally named as such) that lurks in the shadows, whispering doubts about our abilities and achievements. But what exactly is imposter syndrome, and how does it manifest in different ways?

Imposter Syndrome likes to convince us that our accomplishments are merely a product of luck or circumstance, rather than our own skills or qualifications. It's characterized by persistent self-doubt and a fear of being exposed as a fraud of some sort, despite evidence to the contrary. This internal conflict can be paralyzing, preventing us from fully embracing our achievements. Please know that it’s actually not your job to fix. The whole concept has been used as a diversion and tactic to keep marginalized groups in their place. To keep US dim. It’s time to shine, baby.

^^ My rally cry for HR/POPs teams everyday

It's an equal opportunity underminer, affecting individuals across all walks of life. However, studies have shown that certain demographics, specifically women and people of color, tend to grapple with imposter syndrome more frequently.

Imposter syndrome is also a chameleon, adapting to the nuances of various professions. For instance, in the creative world, it might mask itself as a "creative block" or a fear of not living up to past successes. In the corporate world, it could manifest as an inability to speak up in meetings or a constant need for external validation. We continue to recognize how it can show up IRL. But, it would do a disservice to not mention the barriers and infrastructures that were designed all around us - to hold us back on so many levels.

✋🏽 Marginalized communities often bear the weight of imposter feelings more acutely. Systemic biases and limited representation intensify these insecurities. Recognizing this disparity is the first step in addressing it.

The intersection of identities brings forth unique challenges. We (read: people of color) can’t just divorce the systems of oppression from our shared experiences.

recognizing imposter syndrome in others.

Have you ever known someone who leans into:

  • excessive self-criticism

  • reluctance to accept praise

  • and a chronic fear of failure

😫 Hi, I’ve been there.

By creating spaces where vulnerability is embraced, workplaces can become hubs for empowerment. Open communication, mentorship, and acknowledgement of achievements are vital tools in this mission.

✋🏽 Reframing failures as opportunities for growth and celebrating achievements, no matter how small, can help rewire our internal narratives.

Reshma Saujani beautifully explained that, “Imposter Syndrome is the result of structure inequality not individual inadequacy.” She expanded on this by saying our job is to stay focused and that didn’t mean wrapped up in ‘fixing’ ourselves.

roles of society + culture.

Those nasty roots of imposter syndrome often trace back to early experiences and societal pressures. Additionally, workplace environments that lack diversity and inclusion can heighten these feelings, creating a breeding ground for self-doubt.

Inclusivity is not just a buzzword—it's a powerful antidote. Hey companies, listen up! Building spaces where everyone feels heard, valued, and capable can dismantle the blockers. We can break free and redefine achievement on our terms. Honestly, organizations do play a major part in this.

  • Society and culture often prescribe rigid definitions of success.

  • Gender stereotypes can be insidious catalysts.

  • Media narratives play a significant role in shaping our self-perception. Again #representationmatters.

influence on mental health.

Imposter syndrome is not just a psychological hurdle—it takes a toll on mental health. Understanding this link is crucial for holistic well-being.

Prioritizing mental health is so essential. Practices like mindfulness, self-care, and seeking professional help can provide the necessary support.

Professional support can be a transformative force. Therapy, coaching, and mentorship provide tools and perspectives that empower individuals.

✋🏽 Recognizing and reframing negative thought patterns is a powerful weapon against Imposter Syndrome. It's about rewriting the narrative from one of doubt to one of empowerment.

overcoming imposter syndrome.

Embracing a growth mindset allows us to view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than validations of inadequacy. Coupled with self-compassion, it forms a defense against the distraction of imposter syndrome.

Confidence is the armor that shields, but that’s also easier said than done. Cultivating it requires self-reflection, self-celebration, and a commitment to self-acceptance. I read recently that rejection can be a cloak of protection that we may not understand in the moment.

🗣 You are human. Perfection is a lie that we are fed and those tables no longer serve us.

time to sound off.

As a People professional, I want to help you sound off. Here’s a short list of how HR + People Operations (and YES managers) can help team members that might be struggling.

  • Encourage employees to reflect on their accomplishments and celebrate their successes, no matter how small.

  • Normalize the experience.

  • Create a supportive environment through multiple open communication channels.

  • Help employees understand resources and benefits.

  • HR leaders can share their own experiences with imposter syndrome, demonstrating vulnerability and creating a safe space for others to do the same.

  • Promote a growth mindset and provide opportunities for skill-building and professional development to boost confidence.

the next time imposter syndrome shows up...
